Project Overview
The Brief
We were approached by JC Prep to transform an underutilised area within the school into a calm and connected space for children who may need some additional support in a quieter, more tranquil setting.
JC Prep set us the challenge of creating a space that would meet their specific needs while giving us the freedom to use our imagination and create something truly unique. Their only stipulation was that the space should have a nature-inspired woodland theme.
We love a challenge, so our designer, Lucie Marie, set about getting creative.
The Challenge
The Design Challenge
One of the biggest challenges was finding suppliers who could not only meet the design brief, but also provide furniture and products suitable for children aged between 5 and 8 years old.
After extensive research, Lucie Marie identified a range of suppliers and products that she felt would work particularly well within the space.
The location itself presented another challenge. The area was positioned directly off the school's main walkway, meaning careful consideration had to be given to acoustics to minimise noise, distractions and disruption.
Our solution was to introduce hanging acoustic panels to separate the calm area from the corridor. To provide flexibility, the screens were mounted on tracks, allowing the space to be opened up whenever required.
We also designed the panels with a woodland tree motif, helping them blend seamlessly with the overall nature-inspired theme.
To complement the acoustic performance of the space, Lucie incorporated a variety of acoustic ceiling panels in different shapes and colours. These not only helped to control sound but also added visual interest and enhanced the playful woodland aesthetic.
We also created a cloud scene using acoustic scollop panel as well as helping to create different zones within the space.
The Solution
Thinking Outside the Box
Another challenge was the number of structural pillars within the space.
Lucie's solution was to use BuzziSkin, an acoustic wall covering, to wrap the pillars and create the effect of tree trunks. However, we needed to find a way to install the material without creating an obvious or unsightly join.
Thinking outside the box, we enlisted the help of a friendly local sailmaker to incorporate coloured zips into the covering. This clever solution made installation straightforward while creating a neat, seamless finish.
Bringing the Vision to Life
With the initial ideas established, Lucie Marie began developing the proposal and, importantly, worked on a series of detailed 3D visuals.
We really wanted JC Prep to be able to see exactly how their space could look, rather than simply trying to visualise the concept from plans and product samples.
As the visuals began to take shape, Lucie collaborated closely with the team here at Bluesky, refining the design and producing the first set of renders alongside the initial proposal.
We then arranged a meeting with JC Prep, where Lucie Marie presented her ideas to Julie and Catherine.
They loved the concept — so much so that they asked us to proceed exactly as shown in the renders!
The Outcome
The Result
We were delighted with the finished space, and even more delighted by the response it has received.
The completed Calm & Connect space provides JC Prep with a welcoming, tranquil and engaging environment where children can take time away from the busy school environment and enjoy a space designed specifically around their needs.
From the woodland-inspired acoustic screens and tree-trunk pillars to the carefully selected furniture and playful ceiling treatments, every element was considered to create a space that is both functional and imaginative.
It was a fantastic project to be involved with, and we are incredibly proud of the finished result.
